The reason behind the madness...
The purpose of this website is to present the thespians among us with an edition that is made for actors and performances. The attempt of this site is to present an actor who is playing the role of Portia from The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, with the necessary tools to not only be prepared for rehearsals but to better understand the character.
Within the pages of this website you will find a copy of the original script, for Act 1 Scene 2. Also there is the "Acting" edition for Act 1 Scene 2; created with just Portia's lines, the cue lines of the other characters, room for scansion above Portia's lines, footnotes that pertain to Portia's lines, and room on either sides of the text for rhetoric and blocking notes. This is to help the actor to be prepared for the rehearsal setting of the performance process. The actor has the option to copy the acting text from this site or download the word edition that was created with lines to section off the rhetoric and blocking notes.
That is not all, there is also a brief synopsis of The Merchant of Venice centering on the plots that involve the character Portia. Also for those among up who enjoy visual representations to better grasp a character, there are images of artists visions of Portia. This is helpful sometimes for directors that may be visual in their approach to casting, and may seek artists thoughts in this matter.
So what is this all for? This is an edition that is meant to help actors with their necessary needs to perform in the role of Portia. As an actor I have found that most editions are made for reading and studying, not performing. This script is formatted to allow the actor to write and organize their thoughts and other information they may need in order to perform the role to the best of their ability.
Its a script for an Actor complied by an Actor.
